On this day my friend in the image had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour whose tendrils were already seriously affecting his ability to reason, to see and to walk normally. The brightness of the day countered the darkness of what was going on in his mind and he was determined to fight it, walking bravely along the seafront as best he could, taking in the salt air. But as the illness progressed, he slipped further and further into dementia and confusion and lost the fight 3 months later. It was heartbreaking to be alongside him and his family at this time and humbling to see how close to oblivion any one of us could be at any time. The sunlight sprinkled magic that day though and it is a treasured memory. You can see it.
